“When people say ‘Actually you’ve made an impact, you’ve made a difference to my life’…that’s fulfilling. That encourages you to go back the next day and do more, push yourself… I’m extremely proud of my network, I’m proud of who we are…a network that genuinely cares for its clients.” – Bukky Shonola, TaxAssist Hitchin & Letchworth

Roland Wood

"The whole TaxAssist Accountants' concept is perfect"

"The whole TaxAssist concept is just perfect".

Roland Wood, who has been enjoying success as a TaxAssist franchisee for 15 years, has seen the popularity of his business skyrocket after moving into shopfront premises in the centre of Shepperton.

When Roland Wood launched his TaxAssist Accountants business in September 2001, he had always wanted to have his branch operate from the High Street in Shepperton.

“I had always wanted to operate my business from a shopfront and the location in Shepperton was perfect,” explained Roland. “But it was only when it finally became available earlier this year, that I was able to put in place the last piece of my business plan and have been running my TaxAssist business there since May 2016.”

Prior to joining the TaxAssist Accountants network, Roland had worked in administration for Marks and Spencer and for another franchise.

“When the future of my job at (film technology company) Bell & Howell became uncertain, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to take action and, when I spotted TaxAssist Accountants in a franchise magazine, I thought ‘that’s what I really want to do’.

"I had always wanted to be self-employed and the TaxAssist Accountants business model was something I felt comfortable with. It wasn’t as physically intensive as carpet cleaning which I couldn’t have continued to do as I got older – and it was helping people with something essential.

“I began with 60 clients and today have 300 and a fee bank of £200,000.”

Now that he has moved into his dream shop, Roland plans to continue building his business and double his fee bank over the next seven to eight years and then retire.

“Before opening my shop, word of mouth referrals accounted for 70 per cent of my business,” added Roland. “However, I am certain that is going to change as there has been a lot of enquiries from people walking into the shop.”

In the 15 years that he has been part of the TaxAssist Accountants network, Roland has seen many changes in accountancy.

“The major one has been the move towards more IT-based systems to look after clients’ financial needs,” he said. “This has been invaluable in saving my clients time as they do not have to physically meet me and can concentrate on the daily running of their business instead.”

Roland continues to enjoy every moment of his time as a TaxAssist franchisee and is delighted that it has enabled him to work for himself with the knowledge that he can call upon the help of the Support Centre should he ever need it.

“The whole TaxAssist Accountants’ concept is perfect and it has allowed me to meet and help people from all kinds of businesses. My clients range from a children’s entertainer and the owner of a carousel to a music supervisor for boat trips and businesses at Pinewood Studios, which is just up the road from my shop.”
