“When people say ‘Actually you’ve made an impact, you’ve made a difference to my life’…that’s fulfilling. That encourages you to go back the next day and do more, push yourself… I’m extremely proud of my network, I’m proud of who we are…a network that genuinely cares for its clients.” – Bukky Shonola, TaxAssist Hitchin & Letchworth

Steven Mearns

“Growing my own practice and working in the small business community has always been my ambition."

Steven Mearns achieved his membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) with KPMG. He went on to set up and manage his own businesses and to work at senior level in the gas and oil industry, working latterly as the managing director of an international oil service company.

His introduction to TaxAssist Accountants came through his father Ian, who was a TaxAssist franchisee in Aberdeen for seven years. When Ian made the decision to retire in 2017, Steven bought the practice and he has spent the last four years getting to know existing and new clients, growing his team of staff to 11, taking on Cameron Allen as a franchise partner, and expanding by opening two new shops in his territory.

Steven commented: “Having looked at TaxAssist with my father back in 2010, I was really impressed with the business model, so when he suggested I purchase the business it was an opportunity not to be missed. He built an outstanding business, which is well respected within our small business community and I’ve very much enjoyed building on the firm foundations he established.

“Growing my own practice and working in the small business community has always been my ambition. I am a passionate supporter of small business as the lifeblood of the local community, and training and supporting my staff to fulfil their potential and ambitions.

“Obviously the last year has been challenging, but also very rewarding, knowing that the advice that I’ve provided to my clients will have helped them to run their businesses as successfully and efficiently as possible through the pandemic, which will hold them in good stead through the economic recovery.”

Indeed, Steven’s hard work has recently been recognised at the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce’s Northern Star 2021 Business Awards.

Steven and his team at TaxAssist Accountants Aberdeen were awarded the ‘Staff Matter’ award for continuous staff development and support, while Assistant Accountant George Strachan was named ‘Rising Star’ for all the help he has provided clients in Banchory, Aberdeen and Inverurie.
