Background: From Corporate Life to Franchise Owner

After 35 years in a highly corporate environment, Mike Stead had assumed retirement was the next natural step. But when he discovered the TaxAssist Accountants franchise network, he saw an opportunity too compelling to walk past.

“I’d been retired, but I came back into work because I genuinely believe in the TaxAssist brand-what it stands for and how it works,” Mike explains. “It’s a breath of fresh air compared to where I’d been. Instead of a stale, ultra‑competitive environment, you’re running your own business with a massive support team behind you.”

In April 2022, Mike purchased the established Rugby franchise from long-standing franchisee John Barr. With more than three decades of accountancy experience, Mike was ready to bring fresh energy to the business and take it to the next level.

The Power of the High-Street Shopfront

When Mike took over, the business operated from a business park location-functional, but invisible.

“If you didn’t already know we were there, you’d never find us,” Mike says. “One of the biggest advantages of the TaxAssist model is the shopfront concept. I knew immediately that relocating into Rugby town centre would transform the business.”

In 2023, Mike opened his new shop in Rugby, positioned perfectly on a main route through the town centre.

The results were immediate and impressive.

“We had people queuing up before we’d even opened, just wanting to know when they could come in and speak with us,” Mike recalls. “Walk-ins have become a huge driver of new business. Every month I’m signing up three, four, five clients who have simply walked through the door.”

Clients frequently comment on the shop’s fresh, modern, inviting feel-something Mike believes plays a key role in helping potential clients understand the breadth of services on offer.

“It looks new, it looks professional, and it showcases who we are. Why wouldn’t people want to come in and talk to us?”

A Supportive Network That Drives Success

Mike is clear that the support from the TaxAssist Support Centre has been a critical component in his rapid growth.

“The best thing about this franchise is the support team-it’s a massive family. They’ve seen it all before, and they want you to succeed. Everything they do is geared towards helping you grow.”

From marketing to technical guidance, business development to shop set‑up, Mike says the structure of the franchise has allowed him to focus on doing what he does best: building strong client relationships and expanding his business.

“I hit the ground running because I followed the model. The advice and support have been exceptional.”

Ambitious Plans for the Future

The new town‑centre shop has provided the perfect foundation for Mike’s next phase of growth.

“My expectations have been met - and then some. The shop will be the hub for my wider expansion plans, including purchasing additional accountancy practices and increasing my geographical territory.”

With a thriving client base, high visibility and a proven business model behind him, Mike is excited for what’s ahead.

“The biggest opportunity with TaxAssist is joining a franchise that’s been established for nearly 30 years. That credibility is huge. The brand, the team, the support-you can rely on all of it. They genuinely want you to succeed.”

Mike’s Advice to Future Franchisees

Mike’s message to anyone considering joining the TaxAssist network is clear:

“Sign up when you can. It’s a fantastic opportunity. You’re in business for yourself, but never by yourself.”
